The MusES system: an environment for experimenting with knowledge representation techniques in tonal harmony
نویسنده
چکیده
We report here on current works on the MusES environment, designed for experimenting with various objectoriented knowledge representation techniques in the field of tonal harmony. The first layer of MusES is a repository of consensus knowledge about tonal harmony, including an explicit representation of enharmonic spelling, as well as representation of intervals, scales and chords that support standard computations. We give an overview of several systems built on top of MusES: a system for the analysis of jazz chord sequences, a system for the automatic generation of harmonizations, and a system that generates real-time jazz improvisations. We give an overview of MusES and its extensions and discuss several representation issues and their solutions in MusES.

An Object-Oriented Representation of Pitch-Classes, Intervals, Scales and Chords
The MusES system is intended to provide an explicit representation of musical knowledge involved in tonal music chord sequences analysis. We describe in this paper the first layer of the system, which provides an operational representation of pitch classes and their algebra, as well as standard calculus on scales, intervals and chords. The proposed representation takes enharmonic spelling into ...
متن کاملLearning Tonal Harmony from Bach Chorales
Tonal harmony analysis is an intriguing cognitive skill, combining general domain knowledge with contextual cues. In this work we cast it to a Supervised Sequential Learning problem (SSL), and introduce the system geraint, showing how such a problem can be solved via the HMPerceptron algorithm. We explain the main concepts used in music analysis, their use within an automatic environment, and p...
متن کاملAutomatic Functional Harmonic Analysis
Music scholars have been studying tonal harmony intensively for centuries, yielding numerous theories and models. Unfortunately, a large number of these theories are formulated in a rather informal fashion and lack mathematical precision. In this article we present HarmTrace, a functional model of Western tonal harmony that builds on well-known theories of tonal harmony. In contrast to other ap...
متن کاملIIR System Identification Using Improved Harmony Search Algorithm with Chaos
Due to the fact that the error surface of adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) systems is generally nonlinear and multimodal, the conventional derivative based techniques fail when used in adaptive identification of such systems. In this case, global optimization techniques are required in order to avoid the local minima. Harmony search (HS), a musical inspired metaheuristic, is a recently ...
متن کاملMulti-Stage Fuzzy Load Frequency Control Based on Multi-objective Harmony Search Algorithm in Deregulated Environment
A new Multi-Stage Fuzzy (MSF) controller based on Multi-objective Harmony Search Algorithm (MOHSA) is proposed in this paper to solve the Load Frequency Control (LFC) problem of power systems in deregulated environment. LFC problem are caused by load perturbations, which continuously disturb the normal operation of power system. The objectives of LFC are to mini small size the transient deviati...
